The window itself is only one part of a good installation. Just as important is what happens around it, especially in the small spaces and joints that will eventually disappear behind the trim.
At Windura, we use the OSI system to help manage water and air around the windows we install. It involves three primary layers: flashing at the opening, low-expansion foam around the window frame, and exterior sealant at the finished perimeter.
Each has a different job. Together, they help create a properly sealed installation from the rough opening all the way to the exterior of your home. And once the trim goes back on, much of this work will never be visible again.
Layer One: Flashing the Opening
Flashing begins before the new window is installed.
After we’ve removed the old window, inspected the exposed framing, and completed any necessary repairs, OSI butyl flashing tape is applied across the sill and extended approximately 6 to 8 inches up each jamb. Once the new window is set, additional flashing is installed over the window flange as part of the water-management system.
The OSI flashing tape we use has a butyl adhesive with a protective facer. One of its important features is its ability to self-seal around fasteners, like nails, that penetrate the tape during installation.
The purpose of flashing isn’t to suggest that water can never get behind the exterior of a home. Instead, it’s designed to help manage water if it does, directing it toward the exterior rather than allowing it to reach the framing.

Layer Two: Insulating and Sealing the Gap Around the Window
A replacement window doesn’t fit tightly against the framing of the house. There is intentionally a small space between the new window frame and the rough opening.
Our installers need that space to position and shim the window so it is level, plumb, square, and operating correctly. Once the window is properly positioned, however, that gap needs to be sealed.
We use OSI QUAD Foam, a low-expansion foam specifically designed for window and door installations. It helps insulate the perimeter and reduce air movement through the space between the window and the framing.
Why Low-Expansion Foam Matters
More foam isn’t necessarily better.
Some expanding foams can exert enough pressure to distort a window frame if they’re applied incorrectly or aren’t intended for this type of installation. Even a small change in the shape of the frame can affect how a sash operates or how well the hardware lines up.
Window and door foam is designed to expand without putting excessive pressure on the frame. Our installers apply it after the window has been properly positioned so the window stays where it belongs.
Why the Type of Foam Matters
The foam we use is also designed to resist moisture absorption better than an open-cell foam.
That doesn’t make foam the waterproofing layer of the installation, and we don’t rely on it for that purpose. The flashing system is there to help manage water. The foam has a different job: insulating and air-sealing the space between the new window and the wall.
That small perimeter matters more than it may seem. A high-performing window can still feel drafty if air is moving around the frame instead of through it. The same is true for sound: gaps around a window can undermine some of the noise-control benefits of new windows.
Good window performance depends on more than the glass. It depends on the installation around it, too.
Layer Three: Exterior Sealant and Trim
With a full-frame replacement, the trim immediately surrounding the old window is typically removed so we can access the complete opening. New exterior trim is then installed as appropriate for the home, which may include materials such as engineered trim, primed cedar, or PVC brickmould.
The finished exterior joint is sealed with OSI QUAD MAX caulk. It comes in more than 4,600 color matches to common siding and trim manufacturers, so we select the closest match to your home rather than defaulting to white.
One reason we like this product for Kansas City installations is its range. Henkel rates it for application between 0°F and 140°F, and it bonds to wet surfaces. That matters in a climate where our window replacement work doesn’t stop just because it’s November.
There is one thing homeowners should know, though: New trim needs to be painted to put the final seal on the material joints: the window-to trim-to wall and the OSI caulk in between and around the perimeters.

Why Installer Training and Certification Matter
Products like flashing tape, foam, and sealant aren’t particularly complicated to look at. The details are in how they’re installed.
Flashing applied to a dirty or damp surface may not bond as intended. Too much expanding foam can put pressure on a window frame. Poorly applied exterior sealant can leave gaps in a joint that is supposed to help keep air and water out. These are small details, but they’re important ones, and most will be hidden when the installation is finished.
That’s one reason Windura places so much emphasis on installer training and manufacturer-approved practices, and why we use a full-frame rough opening method rather than fitting an insert inside the old frame.

The Parts of a Window Installation You Don’t See
When you look at your finished windows, you’ll see the glass, frame, hardware, and trim. You won’t see most of what we’ve described here. The flashing will be covered. The insulating foam will be hidden between the window and the wall. Much of the exterior sealing work will simply become part of the finished perimeter.
But those hidden details play an important role in how the window performs once we’re gone. That’s why we pay as much attention to what goes around the window as we do to the window itself.
