Hi friend.  Do your pets or kiddos get spooked by loud, booming noises?  Ours too!  With Independence Day fireworks behind us, we’re reminded that we often get asked how windows can help with sound control in the home.

Unwanted outside noise can also be a frustrating problem when you live by a highway, airport, or have party-hearty neighbors who stay up waaaaay too late. This will have a significant impact on the enjoyment of your home.  If this is YOU, keep reading!

There are several ways to dampen sound so you can relax, curl up with a book in peace, and get a good night’s sleep, including:

  • Switching to double-pane windows. Double-pane windows provide nearly 50% more sound protection than single pane, with a sound transmission class (STC) rating being 28-32 compared to a rating of 18-20 for single-pane windows.
  • Upgrading your windows with thicker panes of glass
  • Adding more airspace between the glass panes and/or adding lamination
  • Changing window material (vinyl vs. fiberglass)
  • Swapping your double-hung windows for casement windows, which typically have better sound control ratings
