Hi friend.  With Independence Day right around the corner, it reminds us that we often get asked how windows can help with noise control in the home.

In addition to fireworks around the 4th, unwanted outside noise can occur when you live by a highway, airport, or have noisy neighbors who stay up too late. This can have a significant impact on the enjoyment of your home.

There are several ways you can cut down noise so you can relax, curl up to a movie in peace, and get a good night’s sleep, including:

  • Switching to double-pane windows. Double-pane windows provide nearly 50% more sound protection than single pane, with a sound transmission class (STC) rating being 28-32 compared to the rating of 18-20 for single-pane windows.
  • Upgrading your windows with thicker panes of glass
  • Adding more airspace between the panes and/or adding lamination
  • Choosing vinyl, which often has a higher STC/OITC rating than fiberglass
  • Swapping your double-hung windows for casement windows which have higher ratings
